The 2024 Natural & Organic Products Expo fused two major awards, spotlighted new trends like plant-based aquatic ingredients, and launched The Artisan Food & Drink Expo, showcasing sustainable sourcing and diverse newcomers, with Growth marked by 898 first-time exhibitors and a venue move to Islington planned for 2026.

As the curtains fell on the Natural & Organic Products Expo (NOPEX), the atmosphere buzzed with the excitement of innovation, community, and a shared commitment to sustainability. This year's event was particularly significant, marking the merging of the Natural & Organic Innovation Awards and the Natural Beauty Awards into a single celebration that encapsulated the industry's spirit. Over twenty awards were presented, highlighting trailblazers and game-changers who are pushing the boundaries within the natural and organic sectors.

Among the notable distinctions was the Best Independent Retailer award, earned by Amaranth, and the Lifetime Achievement Award bestowed upon Ruth Hawthorne, Managing Director of Natural Trade Brokers. Other winners included Sweet Bee Organics for their Glow Moisturiser, which took the title for Best New Facial Skincare, and Clearspring's Organic Oat Biscuits, recognised as the Best New Snack. This year’s awards serve as a reminder of the vibrant creativity and commitment to quality that defines the sector, with a full list of honorees due to be released shortly.

The Expo also introduced The Artisan Food & Drink Expo, a new initiative designed to spotlight brands that prioritise provenance and high-quality ingredients. This dedicated space allowed retailers and foodservice professionals to discover exceptional products, such as CHILL SPRITZ, a refreshing beverage infused with Ashwagandha, and a uniquely curated selection of meats like Emmett’s Store's award-winning Suffolk Black ham. Such offerings showcase the growing consumer preference for transparency in sourcing and quality of ingredients.

In addition to award celebrations, NOPEX hosted a series of insightful seminars bringing future trends to the forefront. Leading voices in the industry, such as Jade Hoai from Whole Foods Market and Mary Allen, Founder of Natural Brand Works LLC, captivated audiences with their insights into the evolving consumer landscape. Hoai's session highlighted a surge in internationally inspired snacking as well as an increasing interest in plant-based aquatic ingredients like algae and seaweed, recognising their health benefits and sustainability credentials.

Mary Allen identified changes in consumer behaviour, particularly the rising popularity of functional beverages aimed at enhancing health. These drinks are being specifically formulated to address targeted health benefits, spanning gut health, mood enhancement, and cognitive performance. The discussion also touched upon emerging options for consumers on GLP-1 medications, who are increasingly searching for nutrient-dense and satiating food products.

Such industry shifts mirror broader trends noted at other key events, including Expo West 2023, which reported a marked interest in regenerative agricultural practices and upcycled foods— trends recognised as both sustainable and appealing to the modern consumer. Many brands are now adopting these practices, reflecting a growing commitment to environmental sustainability, which experts suggest is a significant factor influencing consumer purchasing decisions.

The growing presence of BIPOC and women-owned companies at expos is also notable, marking a necessary expansion of diversity within the industry. This year's event saw 898 first-time exhibitors, underscoring a dynamic influx of new ideas and products that cater to a more inclusive audience.

Looking ahead, NOPEX is set to return on 22–23 June 2026, moving to a new venue at the Business Design Centre in Islington. This change promises to enhance the experience for attendees and exhibitors alike, reaffirming the event's status as a premier platform for the natural health and beauty community. Alongside lunch! and The National Restaurant, Pub & Bar Show at Excel London in September 2026, the Natural & Organic Food Show remains integral to the evolving landscape of the natural food and drink industry.

In an era marked by swift transformations in consumer preferences and heightened awareness around sustainability, platforms like NOPEX are crucial for fostering dialogue, innovation, and connections within the community.
