Dunsters Farm has acquired Ralph Livesey, uniting two North-West heritage businesses with a combined 160 years in foodservice. The deal enhances product diversity and reinforces a commitment to local supply chains and independence amid industry consolidation.

The acquisition of Ralph Livesey by Dunsters Farm marks a significant development in the foodservice sector, uniting two businesses with a combined heritage of 160 years. The deal represents a strategic expansion for Dunsters Farm, which currently offers a diverse range of products that includes ambient, chilled, frozen, beverages, and non-food items.

Founded in 1920 with a market stall in Preston, Ralph Livesey has established itself as a reliable supplier to various sectors, including education catering and hospitality, with depots located in Preston and Bolton. The company is particularly known for its focus on fresh fruit and vegetables, aligning well with Dunsters Farm's existing offerings.

Hannah Barlow, managing director of Dunsters Farm, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, “Bringing Ralph Livesey into the Dunsters Farm family is a significant step forward for us. Their reputation for high-quality fresh produce, customer loyalty and regional knowledge is second to none." She highlighted the natural synergy between the two companies, noting their shared origins in the North-West and a commitment to local supply chains and reducing food miles.

Barlow emphasised the importance of remaining independent in an industry increasingly dominated by larger players, saying, “We’re proud to be fully independent and welcome another like-minded business into our family.” This acquisition is seen as an opportunity to continue providing quality service to local communities.

Andrew Christian, managing director of Ralph Livesey, also underscored the significance of choosing a partner that aligns with the company’s values. “This wasn’t just about finding a buyer – it was about finding the right fit," he remarked. Christian pointed out that the partnership with Dunsters Farm would allow Ralph Livesey to further develop its trusted relationships with customers and suppliers while continuing to uphold its community-oriented principles.

The acquisition not only enhances Dunsters Farm’s product portfolio but also strengthens its position within the Caterforce buying group, which enables a strong collective purchasing power to offer competitive pricing across the North and Midlands. The alignment of values and commitment to local sourcing are central themes in this new chapter for both businesses.
