Turning freshers’ week footfall into long-term growth for UK independent drinks retailers

Small independent retailers are seizing the back-to-university season to build lasting loyalty through personalised ranges, promotional offers, and convenience-focused products designed to attract student customers for years to come.

Independent stores near campuses have a narrow window to turn September footfall into something more durable, and the prize is not just a busy Freshers’ Week but a customer base that could keep returning for years. A separate MyTotalRetail article on small independents underlines the wider commercial logic: the stores that win loyalty tend to do so through distinctive ranges, personal service and the ability to react quickly to changing demand. That same agility is what makes the back-to-university season so valuable for local retailers.

Alcohol is likely to remain one of the biggest draws. Patrick McCaig, managing director at Otter Brewery, said retailers should make sure they are well stocked with drinks that are already resonating with students heading into social season. He pointed to stout as a current standout, helped by its easy-drinking reputation and its profile on social media, and said Otter’s new Black stout in 400ml cans is aimed at that audience. Jonathan Ford, off-trade director at Heineken UK, said shops should tailor range reviews to young adults and combine mainstream names with premium options to suit both quality expectations and tighter budgets.

Promotions can also do much of the work. Heineken suggested meal-deal style pairings built around European themes, such as a lager with a Spanish ready meal or an Italian beer with pasta, while Kestrel lager said premium value remains crucial because students want brands they recognise but still feel are worthwhile. The company also stressed the importance of theatre in-store, arguing that secondary displays, dump-bins and strong point-of-sale material matter more when shops are chasing impulse purchases from passing student traffic.

For students heading out to parties, portability matters almost as much as price. David Relph, commercial manager at Vogo, said retailers can make money from compact, eye-catching formats that are easy to carry and quick to consume, including ready-to-drink products and shot-style drinks. He said many shoppers are looking for products they can take on the way to a gathering or drink before a night out, and Vogo’s pre-mixed vodka shots are packaged in pocket-sized pouches in flavours designed for that use case.

Food and snack ranges need the same kind of practicality. Rhea Agarwal, commercial director for the UK and EU at Haldiram’s, said students respond best to ready-to-eat products, affordable price points and multi-packs, especially when stores bundle meals, drinks and snacks into value combinations. She also noted that Freshers’ Week is an ideal moment to secure repeat custom through discounts and introductory offers. Duncan Chappell, national retail sales manager at Brioche Pasquier, said simple, versatile products work well for first-time cooks, while individually wrapped snacks are useful for life on the move.

The opportunity extends beyond western convenience foods. Agarwal said demand for world foods now reaches well beyond international students, while Giovanna Sinisgalli, marketing lead at Kind Snacks, said young shoppers are being pulled in two directions by indulgence and health, leaving room for products that can bridge both. Shaun Whelan, head of convenience at Jack Link’s, said protein is another trend worth watching, and Daniel Shemoon, marketing manager at Pladis UK&I, said retailers should mix new flavour-led products with familiar classics in grab-and-go formats as routines settle after the first weeks of term.
