The UK carbonated drinks market pivots towards health and sustainability amid shifting consumer tastes

Soft Drinks Drinks

The UK carbonated soft drinks sector is undergoing a significant transformation driven by health-conscious consumers seeking functional, low-sugar, and eco-friendly options, supported by rapid growth in online retail channels.

The UK carbonated beverages market is being reshaped by a consumer shift towards drinks that promise more than refreshment. TechSci Research says the sector is being lifted by demand for functional products, cleaner labels and more sustainable packaging, even as sugar rules and health concerns continue to pressure traditional fizzy drinks. The consultancy values the market at $19.36 billion in 2024 and expects it to rise to $25.64 billion by 2030, pointing to steady growth rather than a simple return to older cola-led habits.

Across the category, brands are responding to a stronger appetite for drinks with added benefits, including probiotics, vitamins and electrolytes. Beverage Industry has reported that manufacturers are increasingly positioning carbonated soft drinks as functional beverages, while wider market research from Grand View Research and DigiRoads Research also points to low-sugar, sugar-free and health-oriented products becoming central to the category’s future. That shift has made reformulation a priority, though it can raise costs and create technical challenges for producers trying to preserve familiar taste profiles.

Packaging is another pressure point. Consumer concern over plastic waste is pushing companies towards more sustainable formats, a move that market reports say is now part of competitive positioning rather than a niche marketing exercise. At the same time, demand for natural and organic ingredients is forcing producers to balance innovation with affordability, since newer formulations can be more expensive to produce and may not always mirror the flavour of classic soft drinks.

Online retail is emerging as the fastest-growing route to market, helped by the expansion of e-commerce, home delivery and subscription models. TechSci Research says digital channels are changing how brands reach consumers, while broader industry analysis suggests the same trend is strengthening direct-to-consumer sales and personalised marketing. Regionally, Northern Ireland remains smaller than England or Scotland, but it is seeing growing interest in lower-sugar, eco-friendly and functional drinks, especially among younger shoppers, indicating that the market’s next phase may be defined as much by changing habits as by outright volume growth.
