Seafish's SCEPT tool gains industry recognition and boosts UK seafood sustainability efforts
Seafish’s SCEPT platform, a pioneering seafood carbon emissions profiling tool, has received industry awards and widespread adoption, strengthening UK’s push towards net-zero seafood supply chains amid growing sector collaboration.
Seafish’s Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool, known as SCEPT, has won fresh industry recognition as it gains wider traction among processors, retailers and supply-chain partners seeking to quantify and cut greenhouse‑gas emissions from seafood supply chains. The tool was shortlisted among the finalists for the North Atlantic Seafood Forum’s Sustainability Award and has also been highlighted in other sector prize rounds this awards season.
Uptake of the platform has accelerated: 145 seafood companies across seven countries have registered to use the SCEPT, including processors that together account for roughly 70% of the UK’s chilled and frozen seafood volumes. Names adopting the system include Sofina Young’s Seafood, New England Seafood International, Hilton Foods Group and Labeyrie Fine Foods, illustrating strong buy‑in from large traders and packers. Industry roll‑out has been supported by Seafish and the UK Seafood Forum.
The tool’s reach extends into retail supply chains as major grocers have incorporated it into their net‑zero strategies. Waitrose has publicly confirmed its adoption of the SCEPT to help measure emissions from wild and farmed seafood, and Tesco supply chains have also been reported to use SCEPT outputs, together representing a significant share of UK high‑street seafood sales. Retail engagement means data collected by processors is leveraged across multiple countries and partners, amplifying the platform’s footprint beyond direct users.
Seafish framed the recognition as an endorsement of collaborative development and the scientific rigour behind the platform. "We are extremely proud that the SCEPT and the unprecedented joint working which has led to its widespread use, has been recognised in two key industry awards in the space of just a week. This recognition highlights not only the scientific and technical strength of the SCEPT, but also what industry collaboration can achieve in practice," Seafish’s Head of Responsible Sourcing, Stuart McLanaghan, said, adding that the organisation intends to keep developing the tool and broadening its impact.
Industry partners who took part in the rollout welcomed the progress while stressing the need for continued collaboration to translate measurement into emissions reductions. "I’m delighted for both UKSF and Seafish teams who collaborated on this ground‑breaking industry initiative. The Waitrose and NASF awards recognise the partnership engagement between the wider UK seafood industry and Seafish. It’s a partnership that we aim to continue in other ways of future proofing the UK processing and trading industry with our retail partners," Cassie Leisk, Planet and People Group Director at New England Seafood, said.
The SCEPT joins a small but growing suite of sector tools and recognition schemes focused on sustainability. Blueyou has published an open‑access toolbox for seafood carbon footprint analysis aimed at supporting measurement across origins, while awards such as the Responsible Seafood Innovation Awards highlight novel solutions through separate aquaculture and fisheries categories. The SCEPT’s development was funded by England’s Fisheries and Seafood Scheme and Seafish, with technical work undertaken by Mérieux NutriSciences | Blonk, reflecting a mix of public funding, industry partnership and specialist consultancy input.
