Foodservice Quality Food Awards Categories
Each category has been specifically tailored to represent the key drivers in today’s ever-changing foodservice market. Category definitions have been provided to help you select the right place for your product to be entered. If you are unsure where your product belongs, unsure please contact Katie Theofanous.

(FS) Added Ingredients
Any savoury ingredient used by a foodservice outlet, e.g. cooking sauce, chutney, vinegar, sachets
(FS) Added Ingredients – Sweet
Any sweet ingredient used by a foodservice outlet, e.g. jams, syrups, marshmallows, toppings
(FS) Bagged Snacks
Any snack that is sold in a packet that has a savoury flavour, e.g. crisps, savoury nuts, savoury popcorn
(FS) Bagged Snacks – Sweet
Any snack that is sold in a packet that has a sweet flavour, e.g. sweet popcorn, dried fruit, boiled sweets
(FS) Bakery – Bread
Any baked bread product used in a foodservice outlet, e.g. bread rolls, sandwich loaves, garlic bread, focaccia, baguettes
(FS) Bakery – Cakes & Pastries
Any baked cakes served in a foodservice outlet, e.g. victoria sponge, carrot cake, muffins, loaf cakes
(FS) Bakery – Cakes & Pastries
Breakfast bakery products served within a foodservice outlet, eg. croissants, english muffins, crumpets
Any biscuit item which has a savoury flavour, e.g. biscuits for cheese, crackers, oatcakes
Any biscuit item which has a sweet flavour, e.g. cookies, shortbread, sweet biscuits
(FS) Chocolate & Confectionery
Any chocolate product or sugared confection, e.g. chocolate bars, fudge, packets of sweets
(FS) Christmas Q
Any item created to be used and/or sold at Christmas, e.g. syrups, mince pies, drinks, desserts
(FS) Cold Beverages
Any cold beverage sold to serve within a foodservice outlet. This can be bought pre-made or ready-to-mix, e.g. fruit juices, cordials, smoothies, fizzy drinks, waters
(FS) Cooking Ingredients
Products such as seasonings, salts, cake mixes, rubs and spice mixes. (Please ensure you are very clear how you would like these to be prepared.)
(FS) Dairy Products
Any chilled dairy product used within a foodservice outlet, e.g. butters, spreads, yoghurts, cheese
Products that are typically sold in a delicatessen, for use within foodservice outlets, e.g. olives, sundried tomatoes, parma ham
(FS) Desserts & Puddings
Any sweet pudding or dessert, e.g. mousses, pies, roulades, cheesecakes
(FS) Fish & Shellfish
Any filleted or whole fish or shellfish product used within a foodservice outlet, e.g. salmon fillets, whole seabass, king prawns, mussels, crab
(FS) Fresh Produce
Any prepared or unprepared fresh fruit, vegetable or salad items for use within foodservice outlets, e.g. whole fruits, pre-cut fruit bags, pre-cut vegetables, stir-fry kits, whole vegetables
The ‘Free From’ categories are open to all allergen free products; such as gluten free, egg free, lactose free, dairy free, nut free, soya free or sugar free
(FS) Free From – Savoury
Savoury flavoured products aimed at the allergen free market, e.g. snacks, cereals, sandwiches
(FS) Free From – Sweet
Sweet flavoured products aimed at the allergen free market, e.g. cakes, biscuits, tarts, jams
(FS) Frozen Food – Savoury
Savoury products that are stored frozen and sold to serve within foodservice outlets, e.g. pies, quiches, burgers, chips, vegetables
(FS) Frozen Food – Sweet
Sweet products that are stored frozen and and sold to serve within foodservice outlets, e.g. ice creams, desserts, pastry
(FS) Hot Beverages
Any hot beverage sold to serve within a foodservice outlet, e.g. teas and infusions, coffee, hot chocolate
N.B. The Kitchen Team will have a coffee grinder, cafetiere, nespresso machine and frother available
Any meat product sold to serve within a foodservice outlet.
(FS) Meat-Free Alternatives
Any product or ready meal that is free from meat and sold to serve within a foodservice outlet, e.g. vegetable curries, nut cutlets, bean burgers
(FS) Meal Components
Products comprising the main ‘ready to cook’ component of a meal sold for consumption within foodservice outlets. The outlet with then add a garnish or side dish themselves e.g. marinated / stuffed meat portions, en croute dishes, ribs, stuffed vegetables
(FS) Party & Buffet Food
Food created to be served at a celebration or party either sweet or savoury or as a component of a buffet within a foodservice outlet. Can be ambient, chilled or frozen, e.g. mini pizzas, wedges, canapes, mini cakes
(FS) Pasta, Rice & Grains
Pasta can be fresh or dried, with or without filling. Rice and grains e.g. couscous and pearl barley, can be of any variety or flavouring.
(FS) Pizza, Pies & Pasties
Any pizza, pies or pasties served hot or cold within a foodservice outlet, e.g. steak and onion pie, cornish pasty, pepperoni pizza
(FS) Ready Meals - Chilled
Chilled pre-prepared, ready to cook and eat as a whole meal, sold to serve within a foodservice outlet, e.g. roast dinners, filled potatoes, casseroles, stews
Any soup, ambient or chilled, sold to serve in a foodservice outlet.
(FS) Grab & Go
Products either pre-made or made-to-order at foodservice outlets, that are ready to buy and eat on the move e.g. bagels, sandwiches, baguettes, paninis, salads and snack bars
(FS) Grab & Go Packaging
A unique packaging concept that enhances a 'Grab & Go' foodservice product or adds value, e.g. packaging for hot grab & go products, packaging that separates various elements of a product, innovative cup design
Café of the Year Categories
For the below four categories which are FREE TO ENTER, companies are asked to support their nominations by providing documentation of their achievements across key criteria including:
- Financial performance
- Company development
- Range and product development
- Staff training and development
- Marketing, advertising and promotion
- Customer service innovation
- Community involvement
- Supplier relationships
- Logistics improvements
- Environmental efforts e.g. Fairtrade, ethical policies, sustainability
Contract Catering Café of the Year
This is open to any contract catering companies operating cafés within the UK.
Independent Café of the Year
Entrants must be independent café chains who own 5 outlets or fewer in the UK. Entries must be for a single nominated café, and all submitted information should relate to the performance of that café.
National Café of the Year
This category is aimed at any national café chains operating 10 or more outlets in the UK.
All eligible café chains will automatically be entered for this award, but are also encouraged to submit their own entries.
Regional Café Chain of the Year
This category is open to all regional café chains in the UK.
